The inspiring, unlikely, laugh-out-loud story of how one woman learned to lead - and how she ultimately succeeded, not despite her many mistakes, but because of them.
This is the story of how Kristen Hadeed built Student Maid, a cleaning company where people are happy, loyal, productive, and empowered, even while they're mopping floors and scrubbing toilets. It's the story of how she went from being an almost comically inept leader to a sought-after CEO who teaches others how to lead.
Hadeed unintentionally launched Student Maid while attending college 10 years ago. Since then, Student Maid has employed hundreds of students and is widely recognized for its industry-leading retention rate and its culture of trust and accountability. But Kristen and her company were no overnight sensation. In fact they were almost nothing at all.
Along the way, Kristen got it wrong almost as often as she got it right. Giving out hugs instead of feedback, fixing errors instead of enforcing accountability, and hosting parties instead of cultivating meaningful relationships were just a few of her many mistakes. But Kristen's willingness to admit and learn from those mistakes helped her give her people the chance to learn from their own screw-ups, too.
Permission to Screw Up dismisses the idea that leaders and organizations should try to be perfect. It encourages people of all ages to go for it and learn to lead by acting rather than waiting or thinking. Through a brutally honest and often hilarious account of her own struggles, Kristen encourages us to embrace our failures and proves that we'll be better leaders when we do.

Wow!!! It’s so hard to lead and only meant for certain people!! You realize that working through your “screw ups†Is why you should be leading!! We all make mistakes but admitting them is the best example of a leader!!! Kristen shares all the good, bad, and ugly in her book. She is honest and shows that a true leader learns from their mistakes and craves mistakes only to get better!! I was told early on that “I shared too much and was too emotional†Kristen confirmed for me that it’s good to be honest and show you are human!!!It doesn’t matter how long you have been leading or even if you are no longer leading. Everyone can learn from this book if you want to learn!! We all lead in some way or another. Great read!! I couldn’t put it down and changed the way I was leading my kids after chapter 2!!! It’s never too late to learn. Lead by example!!! How else can you learn if not by example!! I highly recommend this book for anyone finding their way and honestly that’s everyone!!!
Boy, how I wish I had this book 40 years ago when I started my business. Kristen brilliantly nailed it!!! We are all so afraid of looking like we don’t know what we are doing that it is hard to even know the questions to ask. But this story is so beautifully told, so easily read that Kristen will help sooo many be better leaders and business owners.Congratulations on a first-class book. I will be giving it to every new business owner I meet. I don’t know if it is a woman thing or not, but we are always so hard on ourselves, while the men seem to breeze through everything. Kristen, you did such a beautiful job of capturing the agony of learning how to lead. They just don’t teach that stuff in college! Thank you for having the courage to share your screw ups. It almost makes me want to go out and start all over again — well, almost.I can’t wait to read your next book. You are a witty, smart and fabulous writer — and leader!!!
No matter what phase of life you are in this is a must read. I literally couldn't put the book down. It will leave you motivated to be a better you. It'll teach you lessons you wish someone said out loud much sooner. Whether you want to grow professionally or personally I would recommend this book. Kristen is truly inspirational.
We are some of Kristen's biggest fans. Bob Chapman, our CEO, met Kristen when StudentMaid was still young and so was she. But her wisdom and understanding of how to treat a business and her people impressed him. Today, we couldn't be more proud to call Kristen a friend of BWLI and another truly human leader on the journey to building people-centric businesses. Her book is vulnerable, authentic and unfinished, in the sense that she knows she's still building her company and her leadership skills. It is a great read for anyone at any point in their career because she recognizes that as humans, we will always screw-up. And giving permission to leaders to try to do the hard, right things and maybe mess up along the way is important. We are proud of you, Kristen. Your message will allow others to lean into their roles more - we are excited to see what ripples this book has.
So many books written about business success talk about the positives without sharing what mistakes were made to become successful. Kristen offers a raw, warts & all account of all the challenges, mistakes & pain she HAD to experience to not only become successful, but to learn how to become a great leader. A leader who inspires her staff & offers them a safe, friendly, & supportive work environment. If you believe in people before profit, that happy employees result in happy customers & want to inspire your staff to be the best they can be for themselves, then this book is a must for your collection. Kristen even shares the books that she read to learn to become a better leader, which offers different views, styles & perspectives, but with the same theme & foundation. A happy, safe & empowered employee results in creating amazing companies that stand out from your competitors. Thank you for sharing Kristen, I loved reading your story.
This year I went through a deep self discovery phase (and continuing). In that path, I found this book on my amazon recommendation and it was a blessing. I loved Kristen’s stories about developing as a leader. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. However, it would be most useful early in your career. I would buy this book if you’re entering the workforce or recently graduated as you might want to get this learnings early - You will screw up. It’s ok to do so. And it will happen often.
Kristen's story is inspiring to both young and mature audiences. It is written with much courage and honesty. In light entertaining style, It reminds us of the fact we are only human and prone to make mistakes. Kristen dismisses the idea of perfection as a goal; instead encourages us to accept and learn from the twists and turns in our paths caused by our own decisions. This book is sure to delight and inspire anyone thinking about starting a business or new career.
Awesome read! If your business relies on a lot of younger workers, you will relate to all of the lessons in this book. I found myself empathizing with each situation Kristen described and her solutions gave me a lot of ideas to keep in mind the next time I face them. Permission to Screw Up is much, much more than the reflections of a young entrepreneur.., it’s a entertaining series of stories many of us face when launching a new business. The lesson of the “45†stands out as my favorite, both because it’s easily relatable and a nightmare most starts up founders dread. I read a lot of business books and this one is the best I have read in a long time. Kristen’s story is so vividly told, I can just imagine seeing it on the big screen. Add it to your reading list right now, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
